When the days get longer and the weather warms up, many of us feel the urge to open the windows and freshen things up. You do not need a big renovation to make your home feel new. These simple projects can brighten your space and make it more enjoyable for the months ahead.
Start With a Reset
Before adding anything new, clear out what you do not need. Junk drawers, linen closets, the pantry and the cabinet under the bathroom sink tend to collect clutter fast.
Try this simple method for each space:
Empty everything out and wipe down the shelves or drawer.
Sort items into three piles: keep, move to another room and let go.
Donate, recycle or toss the last pile right away so it does not creep back.
Use small bins or drawer dividers to give everything you keep a home.
Working through one area a day makes the job manageable, and the payoff is a home that feels calmer and easier to live in.
Bring Life Indoors and Out
Plant something
Gardening is a rewarding way to welcome the warmer season. Plant colorful flowers to boost curb appeal, start a vegetable bed or grow a few herbs in pots on a sunny windowsill or patio. No yard? Container gardens work well on balconies, and many towns have community gardens where you can rent a plot.
Lighten up your textiles
Heavy throws and dark bedding feel cozy in cold months, but swapping them for lighter fabrics and brighter colors can instantly change a room. Try:
Cotton or linen bedding in light, airy colors
New throw pillow covers for the sofa
Lightweight curtains that let in more natural light
A fresh outdoor rug or cushions for the porch or patio
Store the heavier pieces in labeled bins so they are ready when cooler weather returns.
Get Ready for the Heat
Ceiling fans are one of the most practical seasonal upgrades. They keep air moving, help rooms feel cooler and may let you set the thermostat a little higher, which can help with energy costs. Many fans also come with built-in lights, adding brightness at the same time.
Some rooms already have an electrical box in the ceiling that can support a fan, which makes installation simpler. If you need new wiring or a fan-rated box, hire a licensed electrician to do the job safely. Remember to set fans to spin counterclockwise in warm months for a cooling breeze.
While you are at it, change your HVAC filter and schedule a tune-up before the hottest weather arrives.
