Your New Home Checklist: What to Do After Closing

Closing day is a big milestone. Once the excitement settles, there is a short list of tasks that will help you protect your investment and feel at home faster. Here is a practical checklist organized by when to tackle each item.

Your First Few Days

Change the locks. You do not know how many keys are floating around from previous owners, contractors or neighbors. Rekey or replace locks on every exterior door, and reset garage door codes and any smart lock settings.

Get utilities in your name. Confirm electricity, water, gas, trash and internet are set up and billed to you. Ideally, schedule this before closing so nothing is shut off on move-in day.

Test safety devices. Check every smoke and carbon monoxide detector, replace batteries and swap out any units that are old or missing. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher, especially in the kitchen.

Find the shutoffs. Locate the main water shutoff, the gas shutoff if you have gas service and the electrical panel. Label the breakers if they are not clearly marked. In a leak or emergency, knowing where these are can save you thousands.

Do a deep clean. It is much easier to scrub floors, cabinets and appliances before furniture arrives. Consider having carpets and air ducts cleaned too.

Your First Month

Update your address. Notify the post office, your bank, your employer, insurance providers, subscription services and anyone else who sends you mail or bills. Update your driver’s license and voter registration as required.

Review your insurance. Read your homeowners policy so you understand what is covered and what is not. Here in Florida, take a close look at windstorm coverage, deductibles and whether you need separate flood insurance. Make a quick video inventory of your belongings for your records.

Set up your mortgage payment. Confirm who services your loan, how to make payments and when your first payment is due. Many homeowners set up automatic payments so they never miss one.

Meet your neighbors. A quick introduction goes a long way. Neighbors can share useful local knowledge, from trash pickup days to reliable contractors, and it is nice to have someone who will keep an eye on your place while you are away.

Plan for the Long Term

Prioritize repairs before upgrades. It is tempting to start with paint colors and new fixtures, but tackle safety issues and items from your inspection report first. A small roof or plumbing issue fixed now can prevent a much larger bill later.

Create a maintenance schedule. Write down recurring tasks so they do not slip:

  • Monthly: replace or check HVAC filters, test detectors.
  • Seasonally: service the air conditioning, clean gutters, check for pests.
  • Yearly: inspect the roof, flush the water heater, check caulking and seals.

Get to know your home’s systems. Learn the age of your roof, water heater and air conditioner if you can. Knowing roughly when big items may need replacing helps you plan and save ahead instead of being caught off guard.

Keep important documents together. Store your closing documents, warranty paperwork, inspection report and appliance manuals in one safe place.

Build a home emergency fund. Setting aside a little each month for repairs helps you handle surprises without stress. Many homeowners aim to save a set amount each month specifically for upkeep, separate from general savings.

As you build equity over time, you may want to tap it for bigger projects. A home equity line of credit is one option, and if rates change, a refinance may be worth a look. Whenever you have questions about your loan or your next step, reach out to FLO Mortgage. Welcome home.
